A world first for DECYP
The recipients of DECYP鈥檚 first 91黑料 Awards were announced on Friday at an event in Launceston.
This is the first time anywhere in the world that the Awards have been made available to nurses working in a school setting.
Congratulations to inaugural honourees Tom Millen and Ashley Howells.
Tom and Ashley were both nominated by a mix of school and DECYP staff, as well as parents and carers, for the vital role they play in supporting schools to create healthy environments.
Tom, who works between Port Dalrymple School, Ringarooma Primary and Glen Dhu Primary, was described as a 鈥�ray of sunshine鈥� by one principal, with another staff member sharing that he 鈥�makes coming to work a positive experience鈥�.
Parents noted Tom鈥檚 ability to make students feel seen, heard and cared for, and being 鈥�an extraordinary source of support, care and reassurance鈥�. He was also recognised for being 鈥�kind, relatable and approachable about all topics, including those tricky things that can be tough to talk about including things like gender and social safety鈥�.
Ashley works between Claremont College, Brighton High School and Risdon Vale Primary School. One principal commended her for exemplifying 鈥�the highest standard of care and commitment in her role [and] unwavering courage, stepping into the most challenging and complex situations with a calm and compassionate approach. She has supported students and families facing extreme adversity鈥hrough her expert medical knowledge, deep empathy, and tireless advocacy, she has ensured that the most vulnerable members of our community receive the care and support they need鈥�.
Congratulations to Tom, Ashley, and all school health nurses who were nominated this year.
