Do you know that Legana Primary School is Tasmania鈥檚 first new government primary school in more than a decade?
As part of its 2018 election commitments, the Tasmanian Government committed to building a new primary school at Legana, providing state-of-the-art learning spaces for 350 students.
This exciting project is now more than halfway through construction, and the school鈥檚 foundation principal Liz O鈥橠onahue and DECYP鈥檚 Director Operations Learning Services North Region Amanda Buchanan recently toured the site, and loved how the facilities were taking shape.
Construction is on track for completion in early November this year, with school operations commencing in Term 1 2025.
Beside the progress onsite, the process of building the new school鈥檚 community is also gathering pace.
Two community caf茅 sessions were recently held at Riverside in the State鈥檚 north, which were attended by Liz and representatives from Facility Services and Learning Services. These sessions attracted a great turnout, including parents of prospective students.
Attendees to the sessions were able to hear about the progress onsite, the process for enrolments, and actively contribute to the development of the new school鈥檚 culture.
With a great passion for pedagogy and partnership education, Liz emphasised the importance of building community connections to lay a foundation for the school鈥檚 culture and enhance the students learning experience so that they feel a deep sense of belonging that will help them learn, play, and thrive.
Thanks to the strong collaboration between Learning Services and Facility Services, these sessions were a great success, with additional sessions planned for late in Term 2 2024.
Extensive community consultation throughout the project has not only helped shaped the physical design of Legana Primary School but it is also now setting a strong foundation for the values, vision and operations of the school ready for when the doors open next year.
